Here’s which Colorado businesses can open Friday and where

Starting Friday, businesses in much of Colorado can open their doors to customers for the first time since Gov. Jared Polis issued a stay-at-home order more than a month ago.

Sorry, Denver residents — this doesn’t apply to you. Under the “safer at home” order that went into effect Monday, retail businesses in Douglas County and most of Colorado outside the Denver metro area now may open their doors to a limited number of customers as long as they implement “best practices.”

Personal services including hair and nail salons, dog grooming, massage therapy and personal training can also open under the same guidelines.

While those best practices often remain vague, experts typically recommend allowing fewer customers in stores at a time and requiring at least 6 feet of space between individuals. Customers and workers are also highly encouraged to wear masks.

Restaurants, bars, fitness centers and movie theaters are among businesses that are not allowed to reopen.

Denver and most of its neighbors — Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Gilpin and Jefferson counties — have extended their stay-at-home orders until May 8, so nonessential businesses must remain closed. All except Denver and Gilpin are allowing retailers to offer curbside pickup.

Local governments can also seek waivers from the state to allow for softer restrictions than those in the statewide order. For these waivers, the governments must show a low number of new cases per day or that they are seeing a two-week downward trend alongside sign-off from local hospitals and officials.

Eagle and Mesa counties have already received such a waiver.
